What is anaemia?
Anaemia is a condition characterised by the reduction in red blood cells (RBCs) or haemoglobin in the blood. The haemoglobin present in RBCs carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of the body. In case of decreased haemoglobin, the cells do not receive adequate oxygen for their working and signs and symptoms of anaemia start to appear.
Causes of anaemia
Causes of anaemia include blood loss, iron or vitamin B12 deficiency, infections such as malaria where there is increased breakdown of red blood cells, chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease; thalassemia, leukaemia and sickle cell anaemia.
Signs and symptoms of anaemia
The signs and symptoms of anaemia show up as weakness, lack of energy, skin pallor, shortness of breath, palpitations, chest pain and dizziness. In case of iron deficiency anaemia, additional features such as spoon-shaped nails, pica (eating things such as dirt, paper, hair, lime etc.) and soreness of mouth attend. In vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia, other symptoms include tingling or pin-like sensations in the hands and feet and memory loss. In hemolytic anaemia, jaundice appears as an added symptom.
