What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve that transmits sensations from the face to brain. It is the largest of all cranial nerves and is the main nerve of the face. There is one trigeminal nerve on either side of the face. The trigeminal nerve has three branches – ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular. Trigeminal neuralgia refers to pain in any of the branches of trigeminal nerve. The pain is felt in the face and is sharp, shooting or electric shock like. The pain from trigeminal neuralgia is felt on one side of the face depending upon the side of trigeminal nerve involved.
Causes and Triggering Factors of Trigeminal Neuralgia
The major cause of trigeminal neuralgia is pressure on the trigeminal nerve from a blood vessel or in rare cases, from a tumor. Other causes of trigeminal neuralgia are facial injury, brain lesion, multiple sclerosis. The trigger factors are many. Trigeminal neuralgia can be triggered by as much as touching or washing the face, chewing, talking, air exposure or even brushing teeth. In rare cases, a dental surgery may trigger trigeminal neuralgia.
Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia
The major symptom of trigeminal neuralgia is pain in the face. In a majority of the cases, the pain is located on one side of the face. In very rare cases, the pain may be felt on both sides of the face. The pain can be felt in the cheeks, forehead, lips, around the jaw or around the eyes. The facial pain from trigeminal neuralgia is very severe, sharp, stabbing, shooting, excruciating or electric shock like. The pain may last from a few seconds to minutes. A person can have several attacks of trigeminal neuralgia pain in a day. On the other hand, he may not have any attacks or feel any pain at all for a period of time lasting from a few weeks to months.
Homeopathic Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia
Homeopathic medicines have a special expertise in treating trigeminal neuralgia. Homeopathic medicines first work to reduce the intensity and frequency of attacks. The medicines then work at a deeper level to remove the tendency to have trigeminal neuralgia attacks by dealing with the root cause. Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia are made from natural substances and hence, are highly safe and carry no risk of any side effects. In my clinical practice, I have seen wonderful results in cases of trigeminal neuralgia with Homeopathic medicines. The medicines that I would rank as top grade Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia are – Verbascum, Spigelia, Magnesium Phos, Hecla Lava, Aconite and Hypericum.
Homeopathic Medicines for Trigeminal Neuralgia
Verbascum – One of the top grade Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia
Verbascum tops the list of Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia. This natural medicine has shown wonderful results in a large number of cases of trigeminal neuralgia in my clinical practice. In cases where neuralgia is located on the cheek, temporo-maxillary joint and ear, Verbascum will work best among Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia. Verbascum is also greatly helpful when the pain in face from trigeminal neuralgia comes in flashes. It is also the Homeopathic medicine to fall back on when the periodicity of trigeminal neuralgia is well marked, meaning where facial pain seems to return at the same hour every day. Cases of trigeminal neuralgia that are triggered from change in temperature also respond wonderfully well to Homeopathic medicine Verbascum. Other guiding features to look out for before deciding on Verbascum as the most suitable among Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia are that the pain gets worse from talking or from the slightest movement.
Spigelia – Excellent Homeopathic medicine for left-sided trigeminal neuralgia
Homeopathic medicine Spigelia has shown magnificent results in left-sided trigeminal neuralgia cases. The major symptom that guides towards use of Spigelia is violent pain in the left side of the face from trigeminal neuralgia. The pain can be tearing, stitching in nature and is felt over the left cheek, eye, temples and teeth. A burning sensation on the left side of the face may also be noted in cases where Spigelia would be one of the best Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia. Persons who will benefit most from Spigelia may also complain of sensitivity to touch on the left side of the face. Touching the face worsens the pain in such cases. The attacks of trigeminal neuralgia arising in cold, rainy weather are also strong indicators that Spigelia would be the best among Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia to prescribe.
Magnesium Phos – One of the top rated Homeopathic medicines for right-sided trigeminal neuralgia
Magnesium Phos is one of the majorly indicated Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia of the right side. I have seen highly satisfactory results in trigeminal neuralgia of the right side with use of Magnesium Phos. It is one of the most excellent Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia where neuralgic pain is present on the right side of the face. The pain can be stabbing, stitching, shooting or cutting in nature. Magnesium Phos is also one of the best Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia where there are unbearable, lightning like trigeminal neuralgia pains on the right side. Other prominent symptoms that are a sure sign that Magnesium Phos would be the best mode of treatment are worsening of trigeminal neuralgia pain from cold application or touch on the face. Warm applications and pressure bring relief in such instances.
Hecla Lava – Excellent among Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia that starts from a tooth
Homeopathic medicine Hecla Lava is one of the best Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia related to dental problems. Hecla Lava is an excellent prescription for trigeminal neuralgia which originates from the tooth. Hecla Lava is recommended for trigeminal neuralgia from decayed tooth and also trigeminal neuralgia triggered after a tooth extraction. In both these cases, Hecla Lava has shown brilliant results and proved its worth as one of the most effective Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia cases of this type.
Aconite – Most prominent of Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia triggered by a draught of air
Homeopathic medicine Aconite has shown the most satisfactory results in trigeminal neuralgia cases where a draught of air triggers the attack. Aconite is mostly the choice among Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia where every exposure to a draught of air, no matter how small, sets off a pain attack. Along with pain, numbness and tingling sensation may also be felt in the face. The face may also appear red, hot and flushed when in pain. Restlessness may also be observed along with the above symptoms.
Hypericum – One of the best Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia resulting from injury
Hypericum is one of the most effective Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia resulting from trauma or injury. Hypericum attains top position among Homeopathic medicines that can bring lasting relief from nerve pains following injury. The trauma in such cases can be cranio facial or dental trauma. The resulting facial nerve pains are sharp, shooting, tearing or violent in nature. Along with pain, burning and tingling sensation may be felt in the face. Here Hypericum has shown proven efficiency as one of the best Homeopathic medicines for trigeminal neuralgia.
Hello I have left side neuralgia which has been tolerable for months. Now at nite it has been flaring up. Some teeth
Are sensitive now as well. If spigelia would be good how much would I take and how often? I am 78.
Hi Dr. Sharma!
Will you please recommend what version of Spigelia you recommend for the treatment of TN? (i.e. 6c, 30c, 200ck)
My MIL is in the midst of the worst flair up she has ever had. She is 70 years old. Her TN is isolate to her left jaw so based on my understanding, Spigelia is a good choice. I just don’t know what version she needs.
Your guidance will be much appreciated
Thank you,
Tara
Thank you for this page. I have right sided Trigeminal Neuralgia and have happily noted a few particular remedies here today. I have bought Boiron Magnesia Phosphorica 30C and will try it first , because it’s the remedy that first caught my eye.
I also have on hand some verbascum flowers , which I grew and harvested myself, and I wonder which form of verbascum I ought to try first, as a tea or a tincture or as homeopathic pellets.
I’ve had my TN for about ten years with a great deal of improvement within the last three years , but I suddenly had an unbearable flare-up a couple of weeks ago. I can’t imagine what a trigger might be except possibly emotional stress over the loss of my spouse and the decision to move across country I’m just overwhelmed.
Blessings and many thanks in advance for any advice,
Hi Dr. Sharma — you offer me some hope. But first of all, where are you located? Are your products available without a prescription and where are they sold? Thank you.

Greetings, Dr. Sharma.
My mother has been diagnosed with Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia (Right Side).
Initially, an tooth extraction was done but after it didn’t work, it was diagnosed as TN. The pain is stabbing, burning pain in the right side of the face mostly in the cheek.
She has been on allopathic medication since 4 years. The pain is worsening and is mostly felt during nights. The doctor is suggesting for surgery now.
So, we want to try homeopathic medicines. How shall we start the homeopathic treatment ?
Namaste Dr Sharma , i have trigeminal neuralgia on the left side of my face i get very sharp electric shock specially when i sleep . Please give me your expertise on this subject
Hello, Doctor Sharma. Botanic Choice nerve pain formula seems to relieve my sciatica–had the condition for 6 months. Could it really help, or is it just a panacea? Your thoughts, please.
Patricia Carew
Dear Dr Sharma, my husband suffers from very severe bouts of TN. 8/9 years ago he had a microvascular decompression op to insert a teflon “pillow” between the offending artery/vein and the nerve. Initially he still endured pain then it subsided for around 3 years before returning. He also endured gamma ray treatment but that wasn’t as successful. This recent bout has returned severely after 7 years (with a few minor flare-ups in-between) on the left side in the jaw. On bad days he cannot talk, barely eat or drink.
I want to try him with Verbascum to see if this helps. At present his meds, though on a max of 4 X 75mg morning and evening, aren’t doing enough to give him a good quality of life. He is 65 and takes Coversyl blood pressure tablets. Many thanks for your advice.

Hi, yesterday I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. It starts in the roof of the left side of my mouth to mt sinus cavity then my teeth to my ear and down my neck and also to my left temple. I am put on Tegretol, after my 2nd dose yesterday I still had an attack last night. I also have narcolepsy. Obviously the tegretol doesn’t work for me. Also I’m on 30mg of Adderall for my narcolepsy. I am reading about the homeopathic remedies. How would I go about getting them? My 1st attack was Fri night, I didn’t have any Sat night, I had 1 Sun night, I had 2 Mon night then I had 1 last night. When I chew I have an attack. I don’t even chew on the affected side. I’m 40 years old.
Thank you,
Misty Creel
hello
I have just been told that I have trigeminal neuralgia…
Could you tell me which medicine would be best for me? my mum has given me some hypericum but from reading about it, i’m wondering is magnesium phos would be best. It is the right side of my face that is affected. I suddenly get intense pain in my jaw, teeth, cheek bone, temple. it can affect all at the same time but it varies as to where it first starts. It feels like I have pins and needles jabbing into me along with intense shooting pains running through. I have noticed that to have something warm applied to my cheek/jaw does help.
Cold breeze makes it worse and the skin is very sensitive to touch. Eating or drinking often sets it off. I had a week where it ached but I didn’t have much pain as such but all of a sudden the pain has started again, happening several times a day and sometimes one running into another – just when I think it’s going it’ll all start up again. it lasts anything from a few seconds to 15-20 mins.
Would be glad of some advice
Thankyou
