What is Writer’s Cramp?
Writer’s cramp refers to focal dystonia of hands, fingers and/forearm. Dystonia means involuntary muscle contraction; focal means affecting specifically one part of body. Writer’s cramp is also task specific, which means symptoms appear only while doing specific tasks (here fine motor tasks such as writing and playing a musical instrument are usually involved).
Causes of Writer’s Cramp
The exact cause of writer’s cramp is not yet known. However, writer’s cramp results from excessive fine motor activity and poor pen-holding technique when writing. The focal dystonia or involuntary muscle contraction in a specific part of the body is linked with malfunction of various areas of the brain including basal ganglia and sensori-motor cortex. Factors such as stress and anxiety can worsen a writer’s cramp.
Symptoms of Writer’s Cramp
Writer’s cramp may be classified into two categories – simple writer’s cramp and dystonic writer’s cramp. In simple writer’s cramp, the symptoms appear only while writing. In dystonic writer’s cramp, the symptoms appear not only while writing, but also while performing other tasks with the hand such as using a knife, applying make-up or eating. The symptoms of writer’s cramp are very hard or excessive gripping of the pen, flexing of the wrist, elevation of elbow, extension of fingers, lack of muscle coordination in the hand, cramping pain in the hand, muscle fatigue or weakness, hand trembling and dropping of items such as pen, utensils from the hand.
